I think there are no much stages to fit your idea, besides mostly of the chars FX seems "cropped" or missaligned when happen. In that case you must change or fix every FX sprite to fit the stage.
The stage size its defined by the  BOUNDLEFT, BOUNDRIGHT, BOUNDLOW, BOUNDHIGH, and ZOOM parameters in the *.def, the image you show its about 1 or 2 ZOOM values, but almost all stages are smaller than that.

The more you can do its "redrawn" the stage sprites and replace in the *sff, some are easy to redrawn, but others are really HARD to do. (in my own experience). Try if you want (maybe you like it Shocked )

But dont give up.

Good Luck searching the ones can fit your idea.
